Research Interests

The interdisciplinary research group at the Dept. of Neurology at University Clinic Bergmannsheil currently conducts research exploring both the learning and forgetting aspects of memory by investigating facilitatory and inhibitory conditions for the acquisition of memory traces on the one hand, as well as influences governing the loss of memory in extinction learning on the other.
Methodologically we use combined psychophysiological, neurophysiological, pharmacological and neuroimaging approaches. Our research projects range from a) perceptual learning, cortical plasticity and excitability changes in the visual system - to b) the relationship between cortical excitability, motor performance and brain activation patterns in motor sequence learning, the c) effects of manipulations of cortical excitability and d) the effects of temporal variability of coactivation stimulus presentation for tactile learning. Moreover we investigate e) the neural correlates of the renewal effect of extinction, a phenomenon highlighting the context-dependency of extinction learning as well as f) the influences of dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems upon this renewal effect.
