Neural circuits underlying episodic memory
Speaker:
Abstract:
At its core, episodic memory is our capacity to recall spatiotemporal aspects of an event. It has been shown that this cognitive function occurs not only in humans, but also in other animals, such as rats, mice, corvids, etc. In this presentation, I will discuss the animal research on episodic memory conducted over the past decade in my Lab in Brazil. The focus of my research included behavioural aspects of episodic memory formation and retrieval, as well as the brain structures and molecular mechanisms implicated in these processes. To this end, we have used different methodological approaches to understand how neural circuits are orchestrated and integrated to allow episodic memory formation and expression, including immunohistochemistry, immediate early genes labelling, electrophysiological recordings, behavioural and statistical tools such as graph analysis. How exactly the cortico-hippocampal networks interact during episodic memory formation and expression is still a challenging question and will be our main research goal in the next years.
