The unique role of the entorhinal cortex-hippocampal circuit in vulnerability or resilience to Alzheimer's disease
Abstract:
The entorhinal cortex (EC) -hippocampal circuit is the first to exhibit neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). I will present data on use of spatial behavioural tests to detect the earliest stages of AD in both sporadic and familial cases and on the relevance of this early detection for future drug treatment of AD. The talk will also cover emerging evidence that this circuit may also be selectively implicated in protection against AD, and will discuss the hypothesis that aggregation of pathological tau in the EC-hippocampal circuit is the key molecular-anatomical event in the development of AD.
